What Is Microsoft Intune?

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based mobile device management (MDM) and mobile application management (MAM) platform included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium. In plain English: it lets you manage, secure and control every device your business uses, including laptops, desktops, tablets and phones, from one central place.

Intune is not separate software you install. It's built into Microsoft 365 Business Premium and managed through the Microsoft Endpoint Manager portal. DM1 configures and manages Intune for Perth businesses as part of the managed service.

What Does Microsoft Intune Actually Do?

Enforce device compliance policies. Require a PIN, encryption, and current OS version before allowing access to company data.

Deploy software and Windows updates to all devices automatically, without staff needing to do anything.

Remotely wipe a lost or stolen device, protecting company data even if the hardware is never recovered.

Separate work and personal data on staff phones, without managing the whole device.

Prevent company data from being copied to personal apps or unapproved storage.

Provide a full inventory of every device enrolled, including make, model, OS version, and compliance status.

Do I Need Microsoft Intune?

If any of the following apply to your Perth business, DM1 recommends Intune as a priority:

Staff use their personal phones for work email

Personal devices with company email and no MDM are unmanaged. If the phone is lost or the staff member leaves, there's no way to remove company data.

Staff work from home or on the road

Devices that leave the office need the same security standards as those in it. Intune applies policies regardless of location.

You handle client data, patient information, or financial records

Businesses with data protection obligations need demonstrable technical controls. Intune provides these and the audit trail to prove it.

You're on Microsoft 365 Business Premium

Intune is already included in your licence. Not using it means you're paying for capability you're leaving unused.

What DM1 Finds When Reviewing Unmanaged Devices

DISCOVERED DURING DM1 NEW CLIENT ONBOARDING

Patient records accessible on personal iPhone, no PIN required

A Perth healthcare practice had staff accessing patient records on personal iPhones with no PIN lock and no MDM. DM1 deployed Intune, enrolled all devices, and restricted health record access to compliant devices only.

DISCOVERED DURING DM1 NEW CLIENT ONBOARDING

Ex-employee's personal laptop still syncing company SharePoint

A Perth business had an ex-employee's personal laptop still enrolled in OneDrive with access to all company files. DM1 deployed Intune, enrolled current devices and removed access from all unmanaged devices.

DISCOVERED DURING DM1 NEW CLIENT ONBOARDING

10 devices, 3 different antivirus products, none monitored

A Perth business had ten devices with three different antivirus products installed. None were centrally monitored. DM1 standardised all devices on Microsoft Defender for Business through Intune.
