What Is the Essential Eight

The Essential Eight is the cyber security baseline issued by the Australian Signals Directorate through the Australian Cyber Security Centre. It is the framework the Australian government recommends every business in the country apply, regardless of size or industry, as the practical floor for protecting against modern cyber threats.

The framework names eight specific mitigation strategies. Each one targets a class of attack that has been observed against Australian businesses again and again. Implemented together, they meaningfully reduce the likelihood of a successful breach, and they materially limit the damage when something does get through.

The eight strategies are: application control, patch applications, configure Microsoft Office macro settings, user application hardening, restrict administrative privileges, patch operating systems, multi-factor authentication, and regular backups. Each strategy is assessed against three maturity levels, with Maturity Level One representing the minimum baseline for a small or medium business and Maturity Level Three representing the posture expected of organisations at higher risk of targeted attack.

How DM1 Helps With Essential Eight Alignment

DM1 takes a governance-led approach to Essential Eight alignment. We assess your current posture against each of the eight strategies, identify the gaps that matter for your business, and work through them in a sensible order rather than trying to boil the ocean.

1

Application control

Configured for your Microsoft 365 environment and managed endpoints.

2

Application patching

Done as a high priority through Microsoft Intune and supporting management tools.

3

Microsoft Office macro settings

Configured against the baseline.

4

User application hardening

Applied across browsers, PDF readers, and Microsoft Office.

5

Administrative privilege restriction

Separate accounts for daily use and administrative work.

6

Operating system patching

Done as a high priority across enrolled devices.

7

Multi-factor authentication

Configured and enforced through Conditional Access for every user, with phishing-resistant methods where supported.

8

Regular backups

Configured, tested, and documented, leveraging the data protection capabilities already included in your Microsoft 365 subscription.

If Your Business Reaches Overseas

The Essential Eight is the Australian baseline. It does not automatically satisfy every framework requirement an overseas customer, regulator, or parent organisation might expect of you. Australian businesses operating across borders often face additional standards depending on where their customers and partners sit.

United Kingdom

Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, often required for UK government and enterprise tenders.

United States

NIST Cybersecurity Framework and CMMC for Department of Defense supply chains.

European Union

NIS2 obligations cascading through EU-side buyers and regulators.

Globally

ISO 27001 as the most common contractual ask from international customers.

Industry specific

PCI-DSS for card data, HIPAA exposure where US health data is involved.
